O2 is part of Telefónica group Telefónica is one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies by market cap. Its activities are centred mainly on the fixed and mobile telephony businesses, while its broadband business is the key growth driver underpinning both. It operates in 25 countries and its customer base exceeds 277.8 million globally. Telefónica’s growth strategy is focused on the markets in which it has a strong foothold: Spain, Europe and Latin America.

The Challenge

O2 embarked on a highly complex three year enterprise wide transformation programme in the UK, involving both existing and new businesses, with annual budgets close to £100m. The programme required all functions of the business to work collaboratively to deliver key changes to the business both in terms of revenue, sales, service and infrastructure changes.

To avoid a top heavy bureaucratic structure and to maintain the ability to be innovative and maintain flexibility, O2 wanted to keep a light touch structure , utilising current governance structures and reporting.

The Solution

Red Ant Consulting was commissioned by O2 to help establish and run the programme office, which adopted a cross functional approach to monitoring key projects and programmes against the transformation vision, to ensure it was on track.

The programme office liaised with functional representatives across the business to utilise as much of the current reporting and infrastructure as possible, then added some bespoke tracking to form an overall view of the Transformation programme.

This cross functional view was key in updating the board on progress against the vision, helping the right decisions to be made and setting the agenda for future areas of focus and realignment. The programme delivery structure meant that individual business functions were responsible for delivering the overall transformation strategy, through working towards a shared vision and objectives and then executing this by working together to deliver cross functional solutions which benefited the customer's overall experience.
